The Cumberland BC Museum
The Cumberland Museum & Archives is operated by the Board of Directors of the
Cumberland and District Historical Society
. Their aim is to protect and present the Village of Cumberland's rich and colourful past.
The Museum is open daily in the summer from 9 am to 5 pm. After Labour Day Weekend, we close on Sundays, so throughout the winter please feel free to visit Monday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm.
We have several new exhibits in the past few years. The
BC Telephone Pioneers
has donated a vast variety of telephones. This exhibit allows you to dial through the old step by step machine, similar to the one used in the Cumberland office.
The
Woman's history exhibit
shows the life and contribution of several Cumberland ladies. The show case is filled with clothing, trinkets and treasures.
Coal mining
of our past is presented in the walk through coal mine exhibit in the basement of the Museum. This years addition to the mine is an audio presentation sharing some of the stories of Cumberland miners.
Videos:
100 Years Below
(coal mining of the past on Vancouver Island),
Cumberland Chinatown
(a history of our own Chinatown) and
Reflections
(a story of women pioneering North Vancouver Island) are available for viewing and can usually to be seen at your convenience.
Our museum staff will be happy to assist you with
Cumberland family searches.
We have a data base of newspaper articles 1897 - 1931 along with census, voters lists, etc.
We welcome you to come a visit, research or share in the history of the Village of Cumberland.
