The four Christian churches were all constructed within 11/2 years of each other, 1894-95.

The first Methodist Minister, Rev. W.W. Baer, arrived in 1888 and served Union Mines (Cumberland), Jack Hart's Point (Union Bay) and Denman Island with a total of 4 parishioners.

At Holy Trinity Anglican church the worshipers were called to service by bell ringer Tom Mumford for 60 years.

Services were held in camp houses, private homes, the school, in the open or "any available location" prior to construction of the churches for up to 7 years.

Costs of building a church in 1894 were small considering their ornateness. For example: the cost to build the St. George's Presbyterian church was $3000.00, the Holy Trinity Anglican church was $1000.00 and the church hall $1,200.00.
