The Cumberland Museum presents the life and times of workers and their families during the coal mining years, 1888-1960.

The coal mining presentation will be given in our walk-through coal mine display. Your tour guide will explain the formation of coal, its uses, the dangers and the impact coal mining made in the Comox Valley.

Cumberland was a multicultural community, with workers arriving from Great Britain, Europe, Asia and the United States. Our tour will cover the challenges of immigrants, their education in Canada while trying to maintain the language and customs of their homeland.

Displays and tours also cover the building of a community, the formation of a business sector, the need for schools for the children and recreation for the families. We talk about the need for fire departments, police, hospitals etc. We ring the old school bells and explain how the school bell would also alert the community of a mining disaster.

We share stories of the women who lost their husbands in accidents, who immediately got thrown out of their company owned homes, how they managed and struggled to keep the family fed and clothed.

The tour is about 1 1/2 hours.

Having children in strollers does not work well. We ask that you limit the number of adults, little brothers & sisters, etc.

Special Needs Students: We have ramps and an elevator, wheel chairs do not work well in the coal mine, but we can do the presentation where the child can see from the door. (Small children's wheel chairs seem to work ok.)
