A scheduled tour of the museum consists of a guided tour of the downstairs and upstairs of the building. This takes approximately 1 1/2 hours. If your group has time, we have two videos that are 20 minutes long each.
If you would like to have a question period with our guides, book an extra 10 minutes or so. A self guided walking tour around Cumberland to look at heritage houses and buildings would take about an hour. If you and your students are interested, there are also Cairns and old mine sites around the Cumberland area. A self guided tour of these sites would take approximately 2 hours. When contacting the museum to book your tour, please notify us of how much time you have and what you would like to incorporate into your visit.
Time Frame
1. Tour of downstairs museum - 45 minutes
2. Tour of upstairs museum - 45 minutes
3. Coal mining video - 20 minutes
4. Chinatown video - 20 minutes
5. Quiestion and answer period - 10 minutes
6. Walk around Cumberland (view heritage houses and buildings - self-guided) - 1 hour
7. Cairn and mine site tour (self-guided) - 2 hours
In order to keep the tours to their estimated length, our guides request that all tour participants listen quietly durung the tour. Tour guides will always allow time for questions at the end of an explanation and at teh end of a tour. The museum contains several "hands on" displays, such as the old Cumberland school bell, a mine location model and a demonstration of the technological chain of events involved in using a dial telephone. Except for these displays, our guides will ask participants not to touch or lean on displays, in order to avoid damage to the museum.
Thank-you, and hope to see you soon,
Cumberland Museum staff
